Can confirm linux works. I had a tablet pc that barely could run minecraft (windows 7).. I went and installed regular linux (ubuntu lite or something) and lo and behold, minecraft ran great without optifine being required. It ran even better after I put that on.

I'm coming across posts that mention Ivy Bridge as the latest being supported by Windows XP (SP3). So, an i7-3770 (K) + H61/Z68 motherboard would be the best performer. The 32bit nature of Windows XP limits memory to 4GiB. Yes I know, there was a 64bit version of WinXP, but the less said about it, the better.
The only thing is that just loke regular chrome, it seems to use quite a bit of RAM, and since XP is limited to 4gb RAM, it is often sluggish at times. Looking in task manager it sits around 3-3.75gb used of 4gb RAM, but the CPU usage seems to be pretty low (on my C2Q.) I wonder how it would run on XP X64.
